As part of National Preparedness Month, we are excited to invite you to join us for "El Segundo Ready Day" on Thursday, September 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fire Station 1. 

This free workshop is a rare opportunity for business and community members to come together and learn from esteemed industry experts about the necessary skills and strategies to effectively manage emergencies and will conclude with an open Q&A session.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Director of Emergency Management for Los Angeles World Airports, Justin Pierce, will present LAX's disaster response operations, highlighting lessons learned and best practices in emergency management.

  • World-Renowned Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones will give a keynote address on earthquake preparedness, the science of natural hazards, and how communities like El Segundo can build resilience.

  • Open Q&A Session with guest speakers

Guest Speaker Bios

Justin Pierce is the Director of Emergency Management for Los Angeles World Airports serving Van Nuys General Aviation Airport and LAX, which was one of the top ten busiest airports in the world in 2023. He attended Virginia Tech University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. He has completed higher education programs at Georgetown University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also has been selected to the Naval Postgraduate School Executive Leaders Program.

Dr. Lucy Jones is founder and Chief Scientist of the nonprofit Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, which supports the application of science in the creation of more resilient communities. With a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT, she worked as a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey for 33 years where she developed the methodology used for earthquake advisories in the State of California, created the Great ShakeOut drill, encompassing over 60 million participants globally in 2019, served as Science Advisor for Seismic Safety for the Mayor of Los Angeles and wrote over 100 published papers on statistical seismology and integrated disaster scenarios. She has held visiting professorships at University of California (Hitchcock Chair), and University of Oregon (Morse Chair).
